If you are after a gift to truly spoil that someone special in your life, then look no further. Stunning custom shaving kit made with ancient 5000 – 6000 years old Irish Bog oak.
This is a shaving kit to love for years to come.

Traditional shaving has really had a comeback and men are turning what some see as a chore into an enjoyable experience.
This is a great idea as a gift for him, especially if it for a 5th anniversary gift which is of course wood.

My shaving sets have been featured in GQ magazine 3 times which is a great personal achievement for me and testifies to their quality and appeal.

Made using Elm burl combined with green, gold and white resin.
The Gillette razor option takes Mach 3 blades and the set comes with 4 blades included. Replace these from any good chemist or shop when needed.
The Safety razor comes with a pack of 5 Gillette 7 O’Clock sharp edge blades.
You will also receive an info sheet explaining how the wood evolved over time in the bog to come to its current form.

Irish Bog Oak

What is it?

The Irish bog oak is my favourite wood to work with. Originally oak, it lay in the peat bog land of Ireland for more than 5,000 years, emerging into the Irish sunlight again infused with the colour of the earth. It is a piece of history. Not only does it look beautiful, it feels beautiful with a depth of colour like the peat earth that was a home to it for so long.

Irish bog wood is also known as “morta” and best described as wood that was buried through time in peat boglands, which through the lack of oxygen in the environment managed to preserve the wood from the natural process of decay.

Preserved and coloured by the tannins naturally present in the acidic environment of the bog.

Where is it found?

Bog woods can be found throughout the world. Yew, Oak and Pine are the three main types of bogwood that can be found in Ireland. Bog woods are examples of early fossilasation, and therefore very rare. The Irish bog oaks can be up to five or six thousand years old, as old as the pyramids. The centuries-long process of timber change results in colour alteration from golden-brown to completely black. No two pieces of wood will ever be exactly the same colour.

Ireland harvests fuel from the very ancient peat boglands that preserved these bog woods. “Turf”, a form of fossil fuel, was originally cut by hand using a turf spade which was back braking work. Even today turf is cut from the earth by people for fuel.
Cutting turf the traditional way down though the layers of earth is like cutting through layers of time. The deeper through the earth, the blacker the turf, until it is almost black. The Black turf “Cloch Mhoin”, meaning “stone turf”Hence the name “ Cloch Mhoin”

The longer the Bog woods are hidden in the acidic peat bogs, the blacker & harder they become. In some cases almost impossible to cut.

***The creation process***

  • I select each piece of wood from seasoned stock for its grain and colour.
  • I cut each piece carefully cut to show the best grain before turning it to size on the lathe then sanding it through 5 different grits of sandpaper, before sanding to 12000 grit with micro mesh.
  • It is then rubbed with a tung oil to provide a water resilient and durable finish.
  • After the pieces have been completed they are then assembled using premium fittings.

***Caring for your custom shaving kit***

I do strongly recommend drying the handles after use. With proper care, the finish should provide many years of use.

Made in Ireland.

Really nice quality set, bought for myself. I’d definitely think of it again as a gift.

About Cuando Creator

I always had the idea of working with wood when I was growing up, but it wasn’t until a few years ago that I started with some driftwood from my local shore in Moville. This lead to woodturning and has grown into more than a hobby. I love crafting everything from pens and pencils to shaving sets, cufflinks, earrings and many more products. I work with native as well as exotic woods from around the world, but my favourite and the one I work with most is Irish Bog Oak.
